How much salary should I ask for in Kenya? Work back from take-home pay

To take home KES 30,000 a month, you need to ask for about KES 35,700 gross. Type the amount you need and this tool works back through NSSF, SHIF, the housing levy and PAYE.

This tool runs only in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. No signup.

Estimate, not tax or legal advice. Reviewed on 2 November 2026. Employers talk in gross pay, but you live on net pay. If your rent, food, transport and family costs come to KES 40,000 a month, asking for KES 40,000 leaves you about KES 7,250 short, because 40,000 gross takes home KES 32,746.65. You'd need to ask for about KES 51,600 gross. That's an estimate for a resident employee, using the law on 2 November 2026.

What gross salary gives what take-home pay?

These are the amounts the tool gives, rounded up to the next 100 shillings so you've got a number you can say aloud.

  • To take home KES 20,000, ask for about KES 22,300.
  • To take home KES 25,000, ask for about KES 28,300.
  • To take home KES 30,000, ask for about KES 35,700.
  • To take home KES 40,000, ask for about KES 51,600.
  • To take home KES 50,000, ask for about KES 67,500.
  • To take home KES 70,000, ask for about KES 99,300.
  • To take home KES 100,000, ask for about KES 144,700.

How do I decide on the number to type in?

Add up what you really spend in a month: rent, food, transport, school fees, money you send home and any loan payment. Add something for savings. Then ask what the job costs you that you aren't paying now, such as a longer matatu ride or lunch in town. That's your take-home target.

This number tells you what you need. It doesn't tell you what the job pays. Next, read adverts in your field that print pay, and check the gazetted minimum for your job and area. No tool can give you a fair salary for a job. We don't make one up.

How do I say it in the interview?

Give a range, and say that it's gross. For example: I'm looking for KES 52,000 to KES 58,000 gross a month, depending on the full package. Ask what's in the package, such as medical cover, a pension scheme, house allowance or transport. If you're asked first and don't know the budget, you can ask what range they've set for the post.

What can this estimate leave out?

  • A pension scheme, mortgage interest or insurance relief would lower your tax.
  • Commission and bonuses change month by month, so don't count on them for your target.
  • A bill to change PAYE has been reported. These figures are the law on 2 November 2026. Check KRA before relying on them. NSSF changes again in February 2027.
