Estimate for a resident employee on regular monthly cash pay, with no extra pension, mortgage interest or insurance relief. Reviewed on 2 November 2026. Every row uses the same sums as our net salary calculator. It isn't tax advice.
How the KES 60,000 sum works
Three deductions come off first, and all three lower the pay that PAYE is charged on. KRA has allowed SHIF and the housing levy to come off before tax since 27 December 2024, and the NSSF Act makes NSSF deductible too.
NSSF: 6% of 60,000 = 3,600.00 SHIF: 2.75% of 60,000 = 1,650.00 Housing levy: 1.5% of 60,000 = 900.00 Taxable pay: 60,000 - 3,600 - 1,650 - 900 = 53,850.00 First 24,000 at 10% = 2,400.00 Next 8,333 at 25% = 2,083.25 The other 21,517 at 30% = 6,455.10 Tax before relief = 10,938.35 Less personal relief = 2,400.00 PAYE = 8,538.35 Net pay: 60,000 - 3,600 - 1,650 - 900 - 8,538.35 = 45,311.65
So 24.5% of this salary goes before it reaches you. At KES 30,000 the share is 12.7%, and at KES 200,000 it's 31.4%.
Where each deduction starts and stops
- PAYE starts at about KES 26,741 gross. Below that, the KES 2,400 personal relief covers all the tax, so KES 25,000 gross pays no PAYE and KES 30,000 pays KES 731.25.
- NSSF stops rising at KES 108,000 gross. The most an employee pays is KES 6,480 a month, under the Year 4 limits in force since February 2026.
- SHIF has no upper limit. It's 2.75% of gross, with a minimum of KES 300 a month.
- The housing levy is 1.5% of gross, and the Act sets no cap.
- PAYE rises to 32.5% on taxable pay above KES 500,000 a month, and to 35% above KES 800,000.
Why your payslip may show a different number
The table is for the plainest case. Your own payslip can differ for these reasons, and most of them leave you with more than the table shows:
- A registered pension or provident fund: contributions up to KES 30,000 a month come off before tax.
- Mortgage interest, up to KES 30,000 a month, and a post-retirement medical fund, up to KES 15,000 a month.
- Insurance relief: 15% of premiums on life, health or education policies, up to KES 60,000 a year.
- Meals up to KES 5,000 a month and medical cover paid by your employer aren't taxed.
- Commission, bonuses, overtime and cash allowances count as pay, so they raise PAYE in the month you get them.
Your employer also pays its own NSSF and housing levy on top of your salary. Those don't come out of your pay, so they aren't in the table.
What could change these numbers soon
A bill to change PAYE has been reported. These figures are the law on 2 November 2026. Check KRA before relying on them.
NSSF also moves again in February 2027, when the Year 4 limits end. We'll update the table when the new limits are published, and not before.
