Compare two job offers in Kenya: net pay side by side

A higher salary doesn't always leave you more. Type both offers and your commute, and see what's left each month after deductions and travel.

This tool runs only in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. No signup.

Estimate, not tax or legal advice. Reviewed on 2 November 2026. Sources: KRA: PAYE bands and personal relief, KRA: what comes off before tax, from 27 December 2024, NSSF: Year 4 contribution rates, February 2026, Social Health Authority: 2.75% of gross pay, Affordable Housing Act: 1.5% of gross pay.

Offer A pays KES 60,000 gross and costs KES 300 a day to reach. Offer B pays KES 50,000 and costs KES 100 a day. On paper, A wins by KES 10,000. After deductions, A takes home KES 45,311.65 and B KES 39,029.15, a difference of KES 6,282.50. Over 22 working days, A's commute costs KES 6,600 and B's KES 2,200, so A leaves KES 38,711.65 and B KES 36,829.15. The real gap is KES 1,882.50.

What does this comparison count?

It takes your gross pay and any cash allowances, then works out take-home pay using the same sums as our net salary calculator. Then it takes off your commute and any other regular cost you type in, and shows what's left each month and each year.

  • Cash allowances are treated as taxable pay. KRA counts allowances and other payments in respect of employment as cash pay.
  • Your employer's own NSSF and housing levy don't come out of your pay, so they aren't counted.
  • The result is an estimate for a resident employee, not tax advice.

What should I check that a number can't show?

  • Annual leave. The Employment Act's floor is 21 working days after 12 months. Some employers give more, and civil service adverts give 30.
  • Notice. On monthly pay the floor is 28 days, and a contract can set longer. A long notice clause can hold you back later.
  • Probation. It can be up to six months, and another six only if you agree.
  • Medical cover and a pension scheme. Ask who's covered and what the employer pays.
  • Contract type. Permanent, fixed term and casual jobs end differently. A gratuity in a fixed term contract may be taxed differently too.
  • Hours and shifts. The normal legal week can reach 52 hours, so 40 hours and 52 hours for the same pay aren't equal.

What about commission?

Many sales adverts in Kenya print a basic salary plus commission. Compare on basic pay first, then ask to see what people in that post really earned last quarter. If you type a commission you've only been promised, you may be comparing a hope with a salary.

Get the winning offer in writing

Before you resign from your current job, ask for the offer in writing, with the job title, pay, start date and place of work. Then give your notice. If you've agreed a start date that doesn't fit your notice, ask your current employer in writing to shorten it.

Questions people ask

How do I compare two job offers in Kenya?

Compare what's left after deductions and commuting, not the gross pay. Then look at leave, notice, medical cover, pension and contract type.

Are allowances taxed in Kenya?

KRA counts cash allowances and other employment payments as cash pay, so this tool taxes them. Some benefits are exempt, such as meals up to KES 5,000 a month.

What's the difference in net pay between 60,000 and 50,000 gross?

KES 6,282.50 a month. Net pay is KES 45,311.65 on 60,000 and KES 39,029.15 on 50,000.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. The comparison runs in your browser, and nothing is sent to Work.ke.
