How to spot a job scam before you share money or documents
A pause-and-check routine for offers that create urgency, hide the employer or ask for payment.
Job scams often rely on speed and hope. A legitimate opportunity should survive a few basic questions: who is the employer, where did the role originate, how does the application work and why is someone asking for a payment or sensitive document now?
Do not pay to apply
Treat a request for money, a fee to release an offer or a demand for payment before a clear employment process as a reason to stop. Verify the employer independently before you send anything else.
Check the employer outside the message
Do not use only the phone number, link or social account supplied by the person contacting you. Find the organisation through a trusted independent route and ask whether the role and recruiter are real.
Keep your documents proportionate
A CV and relevant application material are normal. Sensitive identity or financial documents need a clear, verifiable reason. If the request feels rushed or unusually broad, pause and get advice from someone you trust.
