Ruiru and Tatu City

Ruiru is an industrial town about 20 kilometres north-east of Nairobi CBD, and Tatu City is a 5,000-acre special economic zone inside Ruiru Municipality. Together they add factories, distribution centres, campuses and construction work just beyond the Nairobi county line.

What kind of work area is this?

Ruiru sits about 20 kilometres by road north-east of Nairobi’s central business district and belongs to Kiambu County, not Nairobi. The 2019 census counted 490,120 people in the town. It grew as an industrial town: steel, foam, garment, roofing and animal-feed factories operate there, and Brookside Dairy gives Ruiru as its head-office address. Two universities and a level-four county hospital add education and health work, and several banks have opened branches in the Kamakis area.

Tatu City is a 5,000-acre mixed-use special economic zone within Ruiru Municipality, developed by Rendeavour and gazetted as a special economic zone in 2017. Its own site counts more than 110 businesses. The industrial park holds manufacturers and distributors such as Dormans, Cooper K-Brands, Kenya Wine Agencies and the Davis & Shirtliff distribution centre, and the city also has international schools such as Nova Pioneer and Crawford International School. Because the city is still being built, construction, engineering, estate-management and property-sales roles are a large share of its vacancies.

On Work.ke, Tatu City Limited itself was the largest local recruiter in early October 2026, with more than 90 open roles from construction supervisors and engineers to landscaping, sales and legal staff. Agency adverts naming Ruiru added factory, pharmacy, accounting and sales roles, often without the employer’s name. That mix explains why a Ruiru search can return a steel plant, a university and a real estate sales office on the same page, and why the exact site matters more here than the town name.

Many Ruiru adverts come through recruitment agencies that do not name the employer. That is normal, but ask which company and which site you would work at before you travel. Tatu City vacancies are usually posted by Tatu City Limited itself; companies in the industrial park recruit separately under their own names. Kamakis and Membley are parts of Ruiru, while Juja and Thika are separate towns further along the highway.

How to search and verify

Search Tatu City and Ruiru separately. Tatu City Limited posts its own vacancies, mostly in construction, engineering, estate management and sales, and each one links to its careers page. Companies in the industrial park, such as manufacturers and distributors, recruit through their own channels, so look them up by name rather than sending a general application to Tatu City. For international schools, use the school’s own vacancy page.

For Ruiru town, many adverts come from recruitment agencies with the employer hidden. Before an interview you should know the company, the exact site and the pay. For university and hospital roles, use the institution’s own vacancy or human-resources page and read which documents it asks for. Factory roles may ask for a trade certificate, a medical check or experience with a named machine; the advert usually says which.

Plan the commute from where you live. From Thika Road estates the trip can be short; from western or southern Nairobi it can mean two matatus and a long journey each way. Compare offers after transport costs using the net salary calculator, and save the map pin, nearest stage and employer contact before your first day. A job in Ruiru is in Kiambu County, so search under Ruiru rather than Nairobi to see the full list.

Getting there

  1. Thika Road matatus from Nairobi CBD serve Ruiru town; check that the vehicle goes to Ruiru and not only to Githurai or Kahawa. Tatu City is reached from Thika Road, the Eastern Bypass, the Northern Bypass and Kamiti Road. Wikipedia gives about 30 minutes from the CBD by road; allow more at peak hours.
  2. Commuter trains run on the Nairobi–Ruiru line through Makadara, Githurai and Kahawa West. In the first half of 2023 the line had four daily services, two of which started or ended at Kahawa West, so the train suits fixed shift times rather than flexible ones. Check Kenya Railways for current times and fares.
  3. Tatu City and the factories near the bypasses are several kilometres from Ruiru town and the station. Before accepting, ask whether the employer runs staff transport and how the last stretch from the main road is covered.

Useful before you accept

  1. Construction and industrial-park roles can involve shifts, site safety rules and protective equipment. Ask who provides the equipment and how overtime is paid.
  2. For property and product sales roles, ask how much of the pay is commission and how it is calculated, and get the answer in the written offer.
  3. Agency adverts often hide the employer. Confirm the company, the site and the pay before an interview, and never pay a fee to apply.
