Police salary in Kenya: dated official pay announcements
Understand dated police-constable pay announcements, distinguish entry pay from the top of a scale, and verify current rank and salary-point information.

Police pay figures circulating online often mix different dates, entry points and maximums. This page identifies the dates and status of two official or government-broadcaster sources. It does not present an unverified full 2026 rank-by-rank payroll table.
| Source and date | Amount described (KSh/month) | Status of the information |
|---|---|---|
| NPSC, 5 September 2024 | 25,645 entry basic, increased from 21,645 | Historical implemented increase announced by NPSC |
| KBC report of Interior statement, 4 March 2026 | 29,296 for graduating constables; up to 57,700 for serving constables | Announced for July 2026; not individual payroll confirmation |
The two 2026 figures describe different points, not two guaranteed starting salaries. Work.ke has not verified a current complete NPSC payroll circular. Do not use the historical KSh 25,645 figure as a September 2026 starting-pay claim.
Rank and salary point are separate questions
An officer’s rank identifies a role in the service, but a pay scale can contain several salary points. An entry rate and the maximum within a scale answer different questions. A headline saying “up to” does not show what a new recruit will receive.
Start with the rank and appointment category in the official appointment or promotion record, then identify the applicable salary point and effective date. Ask payroll for the current implementation notice if those details are unclear.
Keep an announcement separate from a payslip
The NPSC source explicitly describes its September 2024 increase as basic pay. The March 2026 KBC report describes a planned July implementation. It is useful evidence of the announcement, but it cannot confirm how a particular officer’s September payslip was calculated.
A later payroll document, circular or written HR confirmation should take precedence for an individual comparison. Avoid tables with no issuing authority, missing dates, mixed currencies or totals that silently combine basic pay and allowances.
Check the recurring amount and deductions
Record basic salary, regular allowances, deductions and any separately identified arrears. Net pay is the amount remaining after deductions; it is not the published basic scale. Housing or deployment arrangements can also matter to a comparison.
Use current NPSC and National Police Service recruitment notices when checking an opportunity. A pay article does not announce an intake, reserve a recruitment place or justify paying an intermediary. Verify any recruitment approach independently through the official institutions.
