Where you work in and around Nairobi changes both the jobs on offer and the pay. This page groups 79 current adverts that stated a salary by work area, using the location written in each advert, and links to the area guides for transport and employers.

Each area counts only adverts that stated pay and named a location in it. The mix of jobs differs by area, so a higher middle figure reflects the kind of roles advertised there as much as the area itself.

What the numbers show

Each area advertises a different mix of jobs. Mombasa Road adverts mix showroom sales, HR, accounting and engineering roles for manufacturers and showrooms, from KSh 18,000 for cleaners to KSh 250,000 for a finance manager. Thika Road and Ruiru lean towards manufacturing, food processing and pharmaceutical work.

Westlands has only five adverts with stated pay in this sample, all senior business development and property roles, which is why its middle figure is the highest. Compare like with like: the same job title across areas, not one area average against another.

Count the commute

A higher salary in a distant area can be eaten by daily fares and time. Before you accept, work out the monthly cost of getting to work and back, and check whether the employer provides transport or a commuter allowance.

Before you accept an offer

Advertised pay is usually gross monthly pay. Your take-home pay is lower after PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and the housing levy; use the net salary calculator linked below to estimate it before you compare offers.

Ask for a written offer that states the basic salary, any allowances, how commission or bonuses are calculated, the contract length and the probation period. A figure in an advert is a starting point, not a promise.
