Security guard jobs in Kenya: employer and PSRA checks

Check a security employer, understand PSRA registration, and prepare for a guard or supervisor application without relying on unverified placement promises.

Private security work requires you to understand both the employer and the role. Guarding a premises, supervising a team and monitoring a control room involve different duties. Before sending documents or accepting a placement, establish who is employing you, where you will work and which registration or training requirements apply.

Verify the company and the actual position

Find the company through its official website and read the advert there or through the recruitment route it publishes. Check the job title, station, duties and employer’s legal identity. A uniform, logo or social-media page does not establish that a person offering a job represents the company.

For a supervisor position, look for responsibilities such as shift allocation, incident reporting and team oversight. For a guard role, read the specific site and access-control duties. Do not assume that the word “security” means the vacancy is entry-level or that every role has the same training requirements.

Use PSRA for regulatory questions

The Private Security Regulatory Authority is the relevant official source for private-security registration and licensing guidance. Its published material distinguishes individual service providers from corporate providers. Check the current requirements that apply to you and to the company, rather than treating a company document as proof of an individual’s registration.

If you need to verify a provider or understand a registration step, use the contact details and guidance on PSRA’s own site. Rules, training arrangements and fees can change. Avoid paying an intermediary based only on a claimed personal connection or a screenshot of a certificate.

Prepare documents at the stated stage

Read the advert’s qualification, identity, training and clearance requirements. Keep a list of what is required for application and what is requested later. If the role asks for a Police Clearance Certificate, use the DCI process linked in the related guide; a recruiter cannot replace an official certificate with a personal assurance.

Keep control of your originals and accounts. Share copies through a verified application route and ask why any unexpected sensitive document is needed. Your email password, eCitizen password, bank PIN and one-time codes are not recruitment documents.

Show reliability through real examples

Describe tasks you can honestly explain: maintaining a visitor record, following an escalation procedure, handing over information or identifying an inconsistency in a record. If you have not worked in security, label examples from volunteering or other employment accurately.

For an interview, practise an incident report with the time, place, observation and action taken. Separate what you saw from what you assumed. Good records help a supervisor understand an event without exaggeration.

Ask about the station, shifts and written terms

  • Named employer, duty station and reporting supervisor.
  • Shift pattern, breaks, rest days and any transport arrangements.
  • Basic versus consolidated pay and any stated allowances or deductions.
  • Training, uniform and equipment arrangements, including who bears stated costs.
  • Contract duration, start date and procedure for reporting incidents or concerns.

Check a placement before travelling

Confirm the address and contact independently before a long journey. If the station or payment terms change at the last minute, verify the change with the company. A promise of immediate deployment should not remove your opportunity to read the contract.

Keep the advert, offer and any official receipts. For suspected impersonation, preserve the evidence and contact the company or relevant authority through independently found details. Avoid paying another person who promises a guaranteed placement or refund.

Separate the recruiter, employer and deployment site

A security role can involve a security company, a recruiter and a client site. Identify who will sign the employment agreement, who supervises the work and where you are expected to report. Record the company’s registered name and the official contact route. If a message only supplies a person’s mobile number and a payment request, obtain independent confirmation before travelling or sending documents.

Use a written comparison of day or night duty, shift rotation, travel, accommodation, uniform and equipment arrangements. Ask how additional hours and any deductions will appear on the payslip. The General Order lists day watchman within the general labourer group and night watchman separately; that is a reason to identify the actual duty and applicable terms, not to assume a single national guard salary.

Frequently asked questions

Are private guards recruited through the police?

Private security employment and National Police Service recruitment are separate. Follow the relevant company and PSRA guidance for private security work.

Does PSRA guidance confirm a particular vacancy is real?

No. Regulatory information helps you check the company and requirements; the employer must still confirm the actual vacancy and application route.

Are day and night watchman minimum rates identical?

The 2026 General Order lists them in different occupation rows. Check the applicable row, workplace zone and terms.

Should I pay a person to reserve a deployment?

Verify any request independently through the company’s official contact. A payment demand or promise of guaranteed placement is a reason to stop and check.

What should the written offer explain?

Ask for the employer, duty station, role, pay basis, working arrangement and any equipment or other deductions so you can compare the agreement with the advert.
