County government jobs in Kenya: how to apply

Find the correct county public service board, distinguish current adverts from archived notices, and follow the exact application and document instructions.

A county-government job search starts with the county and the recruiting institution. A national PSC advert, a county public service board notice and a county assembly vacancy can use different application routes. Find the original notice, then build the application around its reference and instructions.

Identify who is recruiting

Read the organisation named at the top of the notice. Confirm the county and whether the vacancy belongs to the county public service board, a county assembly or another institution. Use the county’s official website to reach its recruitment page; do not rely only on a forwarded PDF.

For example, Nakuru County operates an official recruitment portal with individual role descriptions and downloadable notices. That is an example of one county’s route, not a template for all 47 counties. Another board may specify an email, an online form or delivery instructions in its own advert.

Check whether the advert is still open

Record the publication date where stated, closing date, time and advert reference. A PDF can stay accessible for years after the deadline. Search results may show an old page above a newer one, so inspect the notice itself and the board’s current announcements.

Distinguish external recruitment from promotion notices. A promotion may require existing service in a particular grade. Also read whether the position is permanent and pensionable or offered on a fixed contract. A job-group label does not answer those questions on its own.

Build the document list from the notice

Copy the required documents into a checklist. Follow the board’s stated application format rather than sending the same combined certificate pack to every county. Check whether an application form, CV, qualification copies or professional registration is required at application or only at a later stage.

Keep clear filenames and legible scans. If a field requires a reference number, use the exact one in the advert. For a role involving professional registration, check the required status and validity against your own records before applying.

Keep separate records for similar titles

A long county advert can contain the same title in more than one department. Save the department and reference beside the title. The Nakuru salary examples on Work.ke show why this matters: two Clerical Officer II entries in the same recruitment document have different basic-pay ranges and contract terms.

Submit through the stated route

For a portal, complete the required fields and save confirmation. If the notice specifies physical delivery, verify the exact receiving address and deadline before travelling. If email is requested, use the official address and required subject. Do not assume a general county contact address accepts applications.

Check any correction or extension notice on the board’s site. An extension for one reference does not necessarily apply to every role in a previous advert. Preserve the notice you relied on in your application record.

Prepare for shortlisting and the offer

Use official shortlist and interview notices to confirm the next stage. Match your name and the advert reference carefully; verify an unexpected invitation through a contact independently found on the county site. Prepare your originals only in the way the official instructions request.

Before accepting an offer, check the grade, basic or consolidated salary, allowances, duty station and employment term in writing. A salary example from another county or year is useful context, but it does not set the terms of your appointment.

Build a separate file for each county application

Keep the original PDF or page, the county name, recruiting board, post title, grade and reference in one application folder. Save later corrections beside the original and note what changed. This matters when a county releases a long notice covering several departments: a qualification under one post should not be copied into the checklist for the next one.

For a paper application, check the address, packaging, labelling and delivery deadline in the notice before travelling. For an online application, keep the saved form and confirmation. If the same post appears on two sites with different deadlines, return to the county’s own current notice and look for a dated amendment. A forwarded message is useful for discovery, but cannot resolve that conflict.

Frequently asked questions

Are county and PSC applications the same?

Not necessarily. County public service boards and national PSC recruitment can use different portals, forms and submission procedures.

Does a county name identify the work town?

No. A county can contain several facilities and towns. Check the actual duty station in the vacancy or appointment information.

Can I send one letter for several posts?

Follow the notice. Keep references and evidence separate so an application for one designation does not accidentally cite another post.

What does permanent and pensionable mean for eligibility?

It describes the advertised terms, not your eligibility. Qualifications, experience and other conditions are listed separately.

Does Work.ke cover every county vacancy?

No. The directory reflects sources currently checked. Use the recruiting county’s official website to check additional notices and amendments.
