How to apply for PSC jobs in Kenya
A practical PSC application checklist: read the advert category, complete your profile, submit the right reference and save the application summary.

A PSC account is the beginning of an application, not proof that you applied for a vacancy. Start with an open advert, confirm that you qualify and keep evidence of the submission. This guide explains the checks that prevent a saved profile, an old notice or a serving-officer vacancy from being mistaken for a completed application.
Read the category and reference before the title
Open the advert from the Public Service Commission’s recruitment portal. Record the reference, job scale, ministry or department, qualifications, experience and deadline. Read any eligibility restriction near the role title. A post marked for serving officers only should not be treated as an open entry-level opportunity.
Several adverts can have similar titles. Use the advert reference when saving files and checking status, and compare the requirements of that particular reference. The number of vacancies in a notice is a number of positions, not a guarantee of selection or a reason to ignore a mandatory requirement.
Create an account you can keep using
PSC’s portal asks first-time users to register, then log in to apply. Use an email address you control and keep your password private. If you already have an account, follow the official recovery route rather than creating competing records just because you have forgotten the login.
Prepare a private folder of the information you will enter: education, employment dates, professional membership and referee details where requested. Check spelling and dates against your records. You can prepare this material before an intake opens, but you must still follow the instructions of the live advert.
Complete the profile and the vacancy application
The portal requires relevant personal, academic, professional, experience and referee information before submission. Review the form rather than assuming an uploaded CV fills every required field. Give accurate details and distinguish an unfinished qualification from one already awarded.
Select the exact vacancy, check the application summary and complete the submission step. Save the portal’s feedback report or application summary. The official guidance allows applications to be revisited before the advert closes; check and save any amended submission in the same way.
Use a submission checklist
- The advert is open and the reference matches the role you want.
- You have checked open versus serving-officer eligibility.
- Qualifications, dates and professional details match your supporting records.
- The required fields and any requested documents are complete.
- You have reached the submission confirmation and saved the application summary.
- Your private tracker shows the submission date and next action.
Handle errors before the deadline
If a form will not save, read the displayed validation message and check the indicated field. For a technical problem, record the time, the step and the error without publishing your password or personal documents. Use the contact information on the official PSC portal if you need help.
A screenshot of an error does not itself replace a completed application. Do not assume that an email to a general inbox, a saved draft or a social-media message meets the submission requirement. Start early enough to seek help through the stated route.
Check the next stage through the same official source
Use the portal’s application-status and advertised-post-status links and read any official interview instructions. If contacted, verify the reference and what documents you are asked to present. Keep the original advert so you can prepare against its duties.
County boards, universities and other public bodies may run separate recruitment systems. Apply through the route stated in their own advert. A PSC profile does not automatically apply you to every government employer.
Make an evidence map before filling the form
Create a short working table with the advert’s essential criteria in the first column and your evidence in the second. For a qualification, record the exact certificate title and institution. For experience, record the employer, dates and duties that address the requirement. Leave a gap visible if you do not meet a criterion; do not change dates or inflate a responsibility to make the form look complete.
The evidence map also helps when a portal divides education, professional membership and work history into separate screens. Enter the same facts consistently, then compare the saved profile with the application preview. A completed account is not necessarily a submitted application for the vacancy: keep the acknowledgement or status for the particular reference.

Frequently asked questions
Is creating a PSC account an application?
No. Complete the profile and follow the application steps for the specific advertised vacancy. Check the acknowledgement or application status against that reference.
Can I use the same profile for several roles?
You can retain your factual profile, but each application must satisfy its own advert. Check eligibility and submit separately where the portal requires it.
Should I upload every clearance certificate immediately?
Use the document instructions and recruitment stage in the official notice. Avoid buying or uploading additional documents merely because an unofficial checklist says they are always required.
What if a portal fails near the deadline?
Record the error and contact the support route published on the official portal. Do not assume that a screenshot extends the deadline or that sending documents elsewhere counts as submission.
Does first listed on Work.ke mean the employer posted it that day?
No. Discovery and employer publication are different events. Use the original publication date and closing date when they are supplied by PSC.
