What you will do

  • Conduct physical and chemical analysis of oil and gas drilling waste streams at various stages.
  • Perform laboratory tests on materials such as drill cuttings, drilling muds, oily sludge, contaminated soil, wastewater, and treatment products.
  • Collect, preserve, label, and document samples following approved procedures and maintain chain-of-custody records.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment used for environmental and drilling-waste analysis.
  • Record, review, validate, and report laboratory data accurately, preparing certificates of analysis and compliance reports.
  • Implement laboratory quality control measures and ensure compliance with client specifications, regulatory standards, and environmental requirements.
  • Maintain a safe and orderly laboratory and field sampling environment, adhering to health and safety protocols and emergency response procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Analytical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Laboratory Technology, or related discipline.
  • Registration with a relevant professional body where applicable.
  • At least 3 years of laboratory experience in environmental, oil & gas, industrial wastewater, mining, extractives, or accredited testing laboratories.
  • Experience with drilling waste characterization, drilling-fluid analysis, and hazardous-waste testing is preferred.
  • Familiarity with NEMA, WRA, and environmental compliance monitoring is preferred.
  • Knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory quality systems is preferred.
  • Additional training in environmental monitoring, laboratory analysis, and quality management systems is desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental monitoring, hazardous waste handling, chemical storage, laboratory safety, sampling, and wastewater treatment monitoring.
  • Good understanding of Kenyan environmental legislation and standards including NEMA and WRA requirements, ISO 9001, and ISO/IEC 17025 principles.
  • Practical experience with hydrocarbon and metals analysis, wet chemistry, and environmental laboratory testing.
  • Experience with analytical techniques such as GC-MS, GC-FID, and AAS is preferred.
  • Experience using LIMS, chain-of-custody management, data validation, and laboratory reporting.
  • Certifications or training in ISO/IEC 17025 Internal Auditing, HAZMAT Handling, Environmental Sampling, Occupational Health and Safety, First Aid, or HSE Risk Assessment are advantageous.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, report-writing, and data interpretation skills.
  • High attention to detail, integrity, confidentiality, and commitment to data quality.
  • Good teamwork and communication skills, able to coordinate with various project stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively in remote, demanding project environments while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and compliance.
