What you will do

  • Handle various environmental law issues including environmental rule of law, international environmental law development, human rights and environment, and environmental crime, focusing on biodiversity and nature-related law.
  • Conduct detailed legal research and prepare studies, reports, briefs, and correspondence in environmental law.
  • Review legal documents and identify key issues, similarities, and inconsistencies.
  • Draft background papers, legislative texts, commentaries, and teaching materials related to international environmental law.
  • Provide legal advice on international and national environmental law, including the United Nations Charter, MEAs, and UNEA resolutions.
  • Support diplomatic conferences and expert groups by preparing background materials, summaries, and meeting reports.
  • Manage legal technical assistance programmes, capacity building for enforcement networks, and prepare environmental law seminars and lectures.

Requirements

  • An advanced university degree (Master's or Doctorate) in international law, preferably environmental law or related fields, is required; alternatively, a Bachelor's degree in law plus two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted.
  • At least five years of progressive legal experience including analysis, research, and writing is required.
  • At least two years of international environmental law experience is desirable.
  • Experience in biodiversity law and within the United Nations or similar international organisations is preferred.
  • Completion of data analytics, business analytics, or data science programmes is an advantage.
  • English proficiency at UN level III is required; knowledge of French or Spanish at UN level I is desirable.
