What you will do

  • Handle issues related to international, public, private and administrative law in consultation with senior Legal Officers.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare studies, reports, briefs, and correspondence.
  • Review legal documents and identify key issues and inconsistencies.
  • Prepare or assist in preparing legal opinions and advice on various legal matters including international administrative law.
  • Participate in negotiation and settlement of claims and disputes.
  • Review, advise on and draft legal motions and submissions.
  • Assess evidence for relevance and admissibility and prepare briefs of evidence.
  • Represent clients before the United Nations Dispute Tribunal, Appeals Tribunal, and other recourse mechanisms.
  • Provide legal advice on human resources matters.
  • Guide junior staff members.
  • Collect and analyse data to identify trends and support decision-making using data visualization methods.

Requirements

  • An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in international law is required. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted instead.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible legal experience including legal analysis, research and writing.
  • Minimum two years of litigation experience at national or international level, including leading witness evidence before courts or tribunals.
  • Experience in the UN common system or similar international organisations is desirable.
  • English language proficiency at UN Level III in reading, writing, listening, and speaking is required.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Russian, French, Arabic, or Chinese (Mandarin) at UN Level III is desirable.
