How to get a job referral in Kenya without connections
A referral is someone who has seen your work telling a hiring team about you. How to build a referral list from zero, what to send, and where a referral ends and canvassing or paying a fixer begins.

Who you know matters in Kenyan hiring, but a referral is not a secret door. It is a person who has seen your work and is willing to say so. Most graduates already know more of these people than they think. This guide turns that into steps you can take this week, and marks two lines you should never cross: canvassing a selection panel and paying anyone for a link inside. No real job charges you to apply or to start.
How employers use referrals
A referral helps a recruiter with a pile of applications decide whose CV to read closely. It does not replace the process: you still apply through the advert, and you are still shortlisted, interviewed and checked like everyone else.
You can see this in the adverts on work.ke. On 11 October 2026 one group of companies listed a separate referrals entry on its careers page, open only to applicants referred by its active staff. Two other adverts described employee referral programmes, through which staff can earn a reward for referring people. Five adverts asked for three referees with the application.
A referral and a referee are different. A referee confirms your record after you apply. A referral puts your name in front of the hiring team before or while you apply. You need people for both, and often they are the same people.
Referral is not canvassing
Some Kenyan adverts end with a warning that canvassing leads to disqualification. On 11 October 2026 six adverts on work.ke said so in plain words.
Canvassing means trying to influence the people who decide outside the official process: calling a panel member, asking a politician or a senior official to push your name, or offering anything in return. In the public service it also runs against Article 232 of the Constitution, which makes fair competition and merit the basis of appointments and promotions.
A referral is open about who is recommending you, it is based on work that person has seen, and it goes through a route the employer accepts, such as a staff referral scheme or HR. A simple test: if you would be embarrassed for the panel to learn how your name reached them, it is canvassing. Where an advert forbids canvassing, do not contact panel members at all, and ask HR if you are unsure what is allowed.
Build a referral list from zero
Write down everyone who has seen you work, study or volunteer. For most graduates the list starts here:
- Your attachment or internship supervisor, and the colleagues you sat with.
- Lecturers who marked your project or supervised your research.
- Classmates who are already employed, especially in the sector you want.
- People who watched you organise or serve at church, in a chama, a sports club or a youth group.
- A former manager from any job, including casual work, a shop or a family business.
Next to each name, note what they saw you do and where they work now. Ten names with one concrete example each are worth more than a long list of contacts who have never seen your work.
Then match names to open roles. Look for the employers where your people work, and choose one specific advert before you ask anyone for help.
How to ask, and what to send
Ask for one thing, about one job, and make it easy to say yes or no. Three lines are enough.
Hi [Name], I am applying for the [role title] job at [employer], closing [date]: [link to the advert]. You saw my work on [specific task] during [attachment, class or project], and I think it fits what they need. Would you be comfortable passing my CV to the hiring team, or telling me who handles it? No problem if not.
If they agree, send everything in one message so they do not have to search: your CV as a PDF, the link to the advert, and two lines on why you fit, written so they can forward them as they are.
Apply through the official route as well, before the deadline. A referral does not replace the application. Thank the person whatever happens, and tell them the outcome.
Ask your referees before you list them
Never list a referee you have not asked. Call or message each person, tell them which roles you are applying for, and confirm the phone number and email they want you to use.
Send them your CV and the advert so they know what to stress. A referee who is surprised by a call from HR, or who cannot remember your attachment, can cost you an offer you had earned.
Their contact details are personal data. Use only what they agreed to share, and keep referees on a separate page you send when asked, rather than on every CV. When an advert asks for referees it usually asks for three, so have three ready: ideally a supervisor, a lecturer and one person from outside class.
Never pay for a link inside
A person who asks you for money, airtime or a favour to put your name forward is not offering a referral. Under the Bribery Act 2016, giving or receiving a financial or other advantage so that someone performs their role improperly is an offence (sections 5 and 6). It covers activity in the course of employment and in business, not only public office (section 7). An individual faces up to ten years in prison, a fine of up to KSh 5 million, or both (section 18).
Employers say the same in writing. On 11 October 2026, 88 adverts on work.ke stated that the employer or agency does not charge applicants a fee or ask them for money. No real job charges you to apply or to start.
If someone asks you to pay for a job, keep the messages, report it to the EACC, the national anti corruption commission, and tell the employer whose name is being used. This guide is general information, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions
Is a job referral legal in Kenya?
Yes, when it goes through a route the employer accepts and is based on your real work. Paying for a referral, or pressuring a selection panel, is not.
What does canvassing mean in a Kenyan job advert?
Trying to influence the people who decide outside the official process, for example by contacting panel members or asking influential people to push your name. Adverts that forbid it can disqualify candidates who do it.
How do I get a referral with no connections?
List people who have seen your work: attachment supervisors, lecturers, employed classmates, people from church, a chama or a club, and former managers. Pick one open job, then ask one person with a short message.
Should I pay someone who says they can get me a job?
No. No real job charges you to apply or to start. Giving or receiving a bribe is an offence under sections 5 and 6 of the Bribery Act 2016.
Do I need to ask before listing someone as a referee?
Yes. Ask first, confirm the contact details they want you to use, and send them your CV and the advert.
