What the adverts show

Across the 14 adverts, stated pay runs from KSh 25,000 to KSh 200,000 a month. The middle advert sits at about KSh 43,800.

Of the 14 adverts, 13 were posted by recruitment agencies and 1 by a county public service board. Agency adverts often hold back the employer's name, so the agency is shown instead and you apply through it.

What moves the number

Plant operator roles at steel and manufacturing sites are advertised on shift work at KSh 35,000 to 50,000, above general machine operator roles at KSh 25,000 to 35,000. Ask how long a shift lasts, whether overtime is paid, and whether transport and protective gear are provided.

Engineering roles start at KSh 45,000 to 50,000 for graduate trainees. The structural engineer advert asks for registration with the Engineers Board of Kenya, and technical sales engineer roles on Mombasa Road advertise KSh 100,000.

Before you accept an offer

Advertised pay is usually gross monthly pay. Your take-home pay is lower after PAYE, NSSF, SHIF and the housing levy; use the net salary calculator linked below to estimate it before you compare offers.

Ask for a written offer that states the basic salary, any allowances, how commission or bonuses are calculated, the contract length and the probation period. A figure in an advert is a starting point, not a promise.
