For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have a Bachelors degree in any of the following disciplines: Engineering, Petroleum Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering or Technology (Chemical Engineering) from a university recognized in Kenya.

This is the entry and training grade for this cadre. An officer at this level will work under the guidance of a senior officer. Duties and responsibilities will include:- (i) collecting and recording petroleum engineering data on drilling, production, and reservoir performance; (ii) participating in petroleum drilling and related engineering work programs for designated projects; (iii) participating in petroleum resource evaluation; (iv) participating in measurement and calibration of down hole parameters including temperature flow rate and pressure of oil and gas; and (v) monitoring installation, operation, and maintenance of petroleum engineering equipment and facilities.
