Duties and Responsibilities
BACKGROUND UN-Habitat established the Data and Statistics Unit (DSU) under the Knowledge and Innovation Branch as a specialized statistical and urban data unit responsible for global urban monitoring and the production, analysis and dissemination of urban data and statistics. The Unit has more than 20 years of experience in the collection, analysis and production of urban data at global and city levels.
In line with UN-Habitat’s mandate, DSU works to: (a) strengthen the capacity of countries and cities to access and use relevant urban data and information, including through global standards and methodologies for the design, collection and analysis of urban data; (b) support methodological development and monitoring of urban indicators and targets used to assess progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the New Urban Agenda (NUA) and other global agendas; and (c) strengthen the global urban knowledge base by supporting governments, local authorities and other stakeholders in the development and application of policy-oriented urban indicators, statistics and other urban information.
As part of UN-Habitat’s efforts to provide technical support to countries worldwide for efficient monitoring and reporting on urban development agendas, the Data and Statistics Unit under the Knowledge and Innovation branch, is currently leading SDG 11 and the NUA monitoring at the global level.
This task involves development of methodologies which are globally applicable and adaptable to the country level for urban data generation, their piloting, building the capacity of countries to use these methods and undertake continuous reporting on the urban related indicators, and supporting countries and cities to generate accurate and up to date data which is used for national and global reporting on the progress towards sustainable cities and human settlements. DSU is responsible for production of urban data and regular bi-annual updates to the Global Urban Indicators Database.
This database provides information on indicators from the 2026 – 2029 strategic plan, SDG 11 and the New Urban Agenda (NUA) which UN-Habitat has custodianship, as well as those from the globally harmonized urban monitoring framework which was endorsed for Global implementation by the United National Statistical Commission in 2022. The compilation of data for the database and its associated frameworks includes data requests from countries, baseline calculations where data is non-existent, capacity building countries on data production using the harmonized methodologies, in-depth review of global datasets and continued engagements with data producers.
Integration of new technologies and approaches for data production – with particular emphasis on remotely sensed data, geospatial analysis and big data analytics are central to this process. RESPONSIBILITIES The consultant will work in the Knowledge and Innovation Branch, under the direct supervision of the chief of the Data and Statistics Unit. She/he will be responsible for calculating urban indicators from new surveys, compiling and validating data from verified secondary sources, contributing to background research under the Urban 2030 project, and coordinating activities of the EGWM and leading the development of key products for the group.
