Introduction
Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi is a private not-for-profit teaching hospital that provides tertiary and secondary level healthcare services. It is the first hospital in East Africa to be accredited by the Joint Commission International from the USA. The University Hospital has been providing high quality care for the people of East Africa and beyond for over 60 years.
Applications are invited from qualified candidates for the above position based in Nairobi Kenya. The position holder will report to the Nurse Manager.
Responsibilities
- Ensures that all patients attending the clinic have their initial assessment done and documented.
- Assist Cardiologist and Sonographers during a Dobutamine Stress Echocardiogram procedure
- Assist Cardiologist and Sonographers during a Trans-Esophageal Echocardiogram procedure
- Perform and interpret ECG's
- Assist Cardiologist during pacemaker interrogation
- Assess patient/family learning needs and provide teaching and other instructional material regarding all aspects of Cardiac care.
- Follows up on imaging and pathology reports and ensures this are in the patients' files.
- Demonstrates awareness of community resources available to patients and assists with referrals if necessary.
- Reinforces clinic and other appointments to ensure each patient is prepared for their specific treatments.
- Provide one to one and telephone advice to patients and their families regarding clinic bookings and laboratory visits ensure each patient receives care which is specific and appropriate to their needs
- Use communication skills to enhance and augment patient's knowledge and understanding of their specific treatment and progress
- Liaise with other health care professionals within the hospital and community at large regarding individual patient care to ensure seamless transfer of care between disciplines and various levels of care
- Recognize and provide psychological and emotional support to patients and their families, and be able to refer to counsellors when appropriate
- Participate in monitoring of clinics quality indicators
- Be accountable for judicious and efficient use of resources i.e. accurate and timely billing of ward stock drugs and consumables
- Ensure compliance with health and safety guidelines for staff and patients, reporting any accidents, incidents, hazards or equipment defects in accordance with laid down policies
- Participate in unit based nursing education, quality improvement (QI) projects, clinical care program certification (CCPC), audits, spot checks and skill checks.
- Assist in other cardiac units in time of low census in the clinics.
- Participate in hospital wide projects.
- Any other assignment that is deemed appropriate for this level.

Requirements
- RN from a recognized school of nursing or University
- Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya
- Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Demonstrate evidence based knowledge of current practices in cardiothoracic nursing
- Excellent written and Verbal communication skills
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- Demonstrates Critical thinking and Analytical skills
- Demonstrates proactivity and ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Respect for colleagues, patients, and their families.
